A million thoughts ran through my head as I pulled the car back on to road. Pam once again took my hand and quietly led me across the hallway to her bedroom. My bottle of wine could certainly wait and I doubt the TV would miss me for the evening. Moments later, she reached down under the bed and started pulling out brightly wrapped gift boxes. She slowly rose up off the sofa and led me gently by the hand. I was enjoying the camaraderie with the family so much I hated to have to see Doug go off to bed later that night. A short time later I arrived at my destination and rang the door bell. After a while it seemed logical that the group would have to disperse, though I was not looking forward to going back out in the cold and snow. The boy stood silently in the falling snow. After Doug opened his gifts, Pam made breakfast for us all and we sat around and ate as any family would.
